Pakistan’s semi-final hopes hang by a thread

2 min read

Pakistan’s chances of reaching the semi-finals in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Super Eight stage have become slim, though not entirely impossible.

Following a crucial defeat against England national cricket team, the national side’s position on the points table has weakened considerably. Pakistan must now not only win their remaining fixture but also rely on other results to keep their campaign alive.

Back-to-back defeats have knocked Sri Lanka national cricket team out of the semi-final race, further complicating Pakistan’s qualification scenario. New Zealand national cricket team are scheduled to play their final group match against England on Friday, while Pakistan will face Sri Lanka on Saturday.

After defeating Sri Lanka, New Zealand improved their net run rate to plus 3.05, whereas Pakistan’s net run rate stands at minus 0.46 a significant gap that adds to the complexity of the situation.

Limited points and a negative net run rate have made the equation tougher for Pakistan. The team must register a comprehensive victory against Sri Lanka to enhance its run rate and stay in contention.

Cricket analysts suggest that if New Zealand defeat England, Pakistan could be eliminated from the semi-final race even before taking the field against Sri Lanka. However, given the unpredictable nature of the format, unexpected outcomes remain possible, and the national side is determined to deliver an all-out performance in every over of their final outing.
