The international community should firmly reject reckless moves associated with Japanese neo-militarism, Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said on Wednesday.
Mao made the remarks at a regular press briefing while responding to questions regarding recent developments within Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party concerning the loosening of weapons export controls.
“We noted the report and have serious concern over the move. Due to Japan’s history of aggression, its actions in military and security areas have been closely watched by its Asian neighbors and the international community,” she said.
Mao noted that in recent years Japan has been revising its security and defense policies, with officials advocating the possibility of possessing nuclear weapons, and seeking to amend the Three Non-Nuclear Principles as well as lift restrictions on weapons exports.
She stated that the latest development has once again exposed ambitions by right-wing forces in Japan to undermine the postwar international order, bypass domestic legal constraints, and pursue remilitarization.
“The international community needs to remain on high alert and jointly safeguard the outcomes of the victory in World War II and the postwar international order,” the spokesperson added.
