Pakistan’s chances of reaching the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup are all but over though mathematically still alive following their defeat to England cricket team in the Super Eight stage.
With just one point to their name, Pakistan must now win their final Super Eight fixture against Sri Lanka national cricket team on February 28 to keep their campaign afloat. However, victory alone will not guarantee progression.
England have already secured qualification for the semi-finals from the group, leaving Pakistan’s fate intertwined with the results of New Zealand national cricket team.
For Pakistan to advance, they must defeat Sri Lanka and hope that New Zealand lose both of their remaining matches. In that scenario, Pakistan would move to three points and could claim the second semi-final berth.
If Pakistan win but New Zealand manage to secure one victory, both teams would be tied on three points. The final qualification spot would then be decided on net run rate, making the margin of Pakistan’s victory in their last match crucial.
On the other hand, a defeat to Sri Lanka or a washout would officially end Pakistan’s journey in the tournament.
Cricket analysts believe that while the equation remains complicated, Pakistan’s hopes now rest firmly on delivering a convincing performance in their final outing and benefiting from favorable outcomes elsewhere in the group.
