China urges Japan to withdraw Taiwan-related remarks, warns on militarist drift

China on Monday urged Japan to withdraw erroneous remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan and to demonstrate basic sincerity in safeguarding the political foundation of China-Japan relations through concrete actions, a foreign ministry spokesperson said.

Spokesperson Lin Jian made the remarks at a regular news briefing after Japan’s ruling coalition of the Liberal Democratic Party and the Japan Innovation Party won more than a two-thirds majority in the House of Representatives following Sunday’s general election.

Lin said elections are a domestic matter in Japan, but some deep-seated, structural issues and ideological trends reflected in the election were worthy of deep consideration by insightful people from all walks of life in Japan and the international community.

China urges the ruling authorities of Japan to face up to the concerns of the international community, follow a path of peaceful development instead of repeating the mistakes of militarism, and abide by the four political documents between China and Japan, Lin said.

If far-right forces in Japan misjudge the situation and act recklessly, they will surely be resisted by the Japanese people and face a head-on blow from the international community, he added.

Lin said China’s policy toward Japan has always maintained stability and continuity and will not change due to an election in Japan.

“We must solemnly warn the ruling authorities of Japan that the Chinese people’s determination to safeguard the core interests of the country is unwavering, their determination to safeguard the victorious outcomes of World War II and the post-war international order is unwavering, and their determination to counter and thwart the provocations of anti-China forces is unwavering,” he said.
