The Embassy of Pakistan in Beijing on Wednesday organized a symposium titled “Jammu and Kashmir: Past and Present” to commemorate Kashmir Solidarity Day.
Messages from the President, Prime Minister, and Deputy Prime Minister/Foreign Minister of Pakistan were read out on the occasion. The messages expressed unwavering solidarity with the people of Jammu and Kashmir who have endured illegal Indian occupation for over seven decades. They reaffirmed Pakistan’s steadfast political, diplomatic, and moral support for the Kashmiri people’s just struggle to realize their inalienable right to self-determination, and reiterated Pakistan’s call for the resolution of the internationally recognized Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.
Prominent Chinese scholar and senior research fellow at the Charhar Institute, Prof. Cheng Xizhong, delivered the keynote address. He highlighted the historical, political, security, and humanitarian dimensions of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, underscored the urgent need to alleviate the suffering of the Kashmiri people, and called for a peaceful resolution of the long-standing dispute through compliance with UN Security Council resolutions.
In his remarks, Ambassador of Pakistan to China, H.E. Mr. Khalil Hashmi, thanked Chinese scholars, academics, researchers, and media representatives for their participation. He expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for its principled and consistent stance on the Jammu and Kashmir issue and emphasized the need for a just settlement in line with UN Security Council resolutions and the legitimate aspirations of the Kashmiri people.
Ambassador Hashmi stated that the Jammu and Kashmir dispute was fundamentally about the integrity of international law, established norms, and the UN-centred global order. He stressed that all countries were obligated under the UN Charter to comply with the decisions of the UN Security Council. By refusing to implement UN Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir for more than seven decades, he said, India remains among a handful of states that present themselves as democracies while persistently violating international law.
He further noted that India attempts to divert global attention from its continued illegal occupation and disregard for the rule of law by falsely equating the Kashmiri freedom struggle with terrorism. The ambassador underscored that an early and just resolution of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute was essential for achieving durable peace and stability in the region and beyond.
The event also featured the screening of a documentary highlighting the historical background of the Kashmir dispute and grave human rights violations committed by Indian security forces, followed by a photo exhibition.
