Pakistan football coach urges modern training to unlock local talent

Pakistan national football team head coach Nolberto Solano has emphasized that the country has no shortage of talent, but emerging players need training aligned with modern standards to compete on the international stage.

Speaking ahead of the 31st National Challenge Cup, which begins Wednesday in Karachi, Solano said such domestic tournaments are essential to identify and nurture players for future international competitions. “Grassroots-level competitions should be held consistently, starting from schools, to uncover new talent,” he told Express.

The Peruvian coach highlighted the role of experienced foreign players in the national team but stressed the need for a strategic plan to bring local talent to the forefront. “With focused and relentless efforts, Pakistan can improve its ranking in FIFA’s global standings,” he said.

Currently, attention is focused on the SAFF Under-20 Football Championship in the Maldives this March. Solano praised the Pakistan Football Federation for its efforts under FIFA supervision and pledged to contribute fully as head coach.

National Football Federation Vice President Hafiz Zaka said hosting national-level events will boost football development after a 10-year gap. Provincial president Azam Khan welcomed Sindh hosting the Challenge Cup, which features 12 teams, including defending champions Pakistan WAPDA, divided into four groups. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarterfinals. Matches will be held simultaneously at KPT and KMC stadiums.
