Rani Mukerji faces social media backlash over family role comments

2 min read

Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji is facing criticism on social media following remarks she made in a recent interview about gender roles and family dynamics. Speaking about how children learn behavior at home, Rani said that children often imitate what they observe between their parents. She emphasized that respect begins at home, and if a child witnesses mistreatment of their mother, they may come to believe such behavior toward women is normal.

Rani added that fathers have a responsibility to treat their wives with respect, as children learn from daily household interactions. She said that if a mother is treated well, sons will understand that women deserve equal standing in society.

One statement that sparked particular controversy on social media was her comment that a mother should “run the father” at home, which she described as the correct approach. Rani also shared a school anecdote, recalling a time she slapped a boy, and humorously mentioned her husband Aditya Chopra, saying that he should not be asked about what happens at home daily.

Many social media users, particularly on Reddit and Instagram, criticized her comments, saying they found little humor in them and questioned the validity of some of her statements. Some argued that raising one’s voice in a relationship should never be considered acceptable and that problems should be resolved calmly and respectfully.

Others said the remarks, framed as humor, were inappropriate regardless of her generation or intent.
