Turkey detains 151 suspects linked to Gulen movement

Turkish authorities have detained 151 suspects across 46 provinces in coordinated operations targeting the Gulen movement over alleged links to the failed 2016 coup, Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced Wednesday.

According to Yerlikaya, the simultaneous raids focused on individuals who either had finalized prison sentences or outstanding arrest warrants. Of those detained, 82 were formally arrested, while 54 were placed under judicial supervision, and legal procedures for the remaining suspects were ongoing.

Türkiye classifies the Gulen movement as a terrorist organization, holding it responsible for the July 2016 coup attempt, which left at least 250 people dead. The movement was led by cleric Fethullah Gulen, who lived in the United States from 1999 until his death in 2024.

The Interior Minister said suspects were accused of working within the movement’s judiciary, military, education, student, and other covert networks. Operations were carried out by counter-terrorism, anti-smuggling, organized crime, and intelligence units, reflecting Ankara’s continued crackdown on groups linked to the 2016 events.
