European Parliament delays EU-U.S. trade deal vote

The European Parliament has postponed its vote on the proposed EU-U.S. trade deal, citing the need for further review of the agreement’s implications for environmental, labor, and regulatory standards.

According to a statement issued by the Parliament on Tuesday, members expressed concerns that certain provisions in the deal could undermine European regulations on food safety and climate commitments. The decision to delay the vote gives lawmakers additional time to scrutinize the pact and hold consultations with relevant stakeholders.

European Commission officials, who negotiated the trade deal on behalf of the EU, acknowledged the delay but emphasized their commitment to finalizing the agreement.
“We respect the European Parliament’s prerogative to examine all aspects of the deal carefully. Our goal remains to secure a fair and balanced agreement that benefits both European and U.S. businesses,” the Commission said.

U.S. trade representatives had signaled their expectation that the Parliament would approve the deal in early 2026, but the postponement could delay ratification and implementation of the trade agreement. Analysts say the delay reflects growing scrutiny of transatlantic trade pacts amid rising concerns over environmental and labor standards.

The trade deal, aimed at reducing tariffs, easing regulatory barriers, and strengthening economic ties between the EU and the United States, has been under negotiation for over two years. While supporters argue it will boost trade and investment on both sides of the Atlantic, critics warn that it could favor corporate interests at the expense of public standards.
