Motorway police shut multiple routes as visibility drops

2 min read

Dense fog has forced the Motorway Police Central Region to close several major motorways across Punjab as a precautionary measure to protect lives and property, officials said.

According to Central Region spokesperson Syed Imran Ahmed, the M-2 motorway has been closed from Lahore to Kot Momin due to severely reduced visibility. The M-3 motorway from Faizpur to Rajana, the M-4 from Pindi Bhattian to Multan, and the M-5 from Multan to Rohri have also been completely shut for traffic because of thick fog.

The spokesperson added that the M-11 motorway from Lahore to Sambrial has also been closed due to persistent fog conditions.

Fog has also engulfed several sections of the National Highway. Heavy fog has been reported in Lahore, Manga Mandi, Pattoki, Okara, Sahiwal, Kassowal and Iqbal Nagar, while foggy conditions continue in Mian Channu, Khanewal, Multan, Basti Malook, Lodhran and Bahawalpur.

Visibility has further been affected in Ahmedpur East, Taranda Muhammad Panah, Iqbalabad, Rahim Yar Khan and Sadiqabad, creating hazardous driving conditions for motorists.

The Motorway Police warned that lane violations during foggy weather can lead to serious accidents. Road users have been urged to strictly follow lane discipline, avoid unnecessary travel, maintain a safe distance from vehicles ahead, refrain from speeding and ensure the use of fog lights.

Officials advised that travel between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm is relatively safer during foggy conditions, and commuters should prefer daytime travel whenever possible.

For guidance, updates or emergency assistance, citizens have been advised to contact the Motorway Police helpline at 130.
