A parliamentary committee comprising members of the Senate and National Assembly has shortlisted two candidates for the position of PEMRA Chairman.
According to sources, the committee meeting faced delays, with MNA Shahbaz participating via video link. The four-member committee included Choudhry Shahbaz Babar, Syed Raza Ali Gilani, Senator Sarmad Ali, and Senator Ali Zafar, though opposition members boycotted the meeting and Senator Zafar did not attend. Shahbaz Babar was elected as the committee chair.
The committee reviewed the profiles of Anbarin Jan, Brigadier (R) Anwar Mateen Haider, Dr. Hamid Irfan, and Ashraf Khan. Following scrutiny, the panel shortlisted Anbarin Jan and Brigadier (R) Anwar as potential candidates for the chairpersonship.
Senator Sarmad Ali told media that a final decision could be expected within a day or two. He noted that if Anbarin Jan is appointed, she will become the first female PEMRA chairman in Pakistan’s history, while Brigadier (R) Anwar would be the first retired brigadier to hold the position.
Sources indicated that the committee has forwarded Anbarin Jan’s name to the Prime Minister for consultation. The President will formally approve the appointment based on the Prime Minister’s advice.
