Local government elections in the federal capital are likely to be delayed once again, as the government has decided to introduce an ordinance to amend the Islamabad local government law, sources said on Friday.

The decision was discussed during a federal cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, in which the cabinet endorsed the decisions of the Cabinet Committee on Legislative Cases (CCLC).

Sources said the issue of Islamabad’s local government elections also came under consideration during the meeting, where the possibility of another delay was discussed.

According to the sources, the government has decided to bring an ordinance to amend the Islamabad Local Government Act. Through the proposed ordinance, the government plans to increase the number of wards in the federal capital, a move that is expected to affect the election timeline.

The meeting also reviewed the country’s overall economic and political situation. In addition, the cabinet ratified decisions taken by the sub-committee on legislation in its meetings held on December 3 and December 30.
