National wheat oversight committee meets to assess Rabi crop 2025-26

3 min read

Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain chaired the second meeting of the National Wheat Oversight Committee to review wheat sowing progress for Rabi 2025–26, assess the current wheat stock position, and examine implementation mechanisms under the Integrated National Wheat Policy (INWP).

During the meeting, provinces were advised to constitute Provincial Implementation Units to ensure effective and coordinated implementation of the INWP.

The committee reviewed province-wise wheat sowing progress. In Punjab, wheat sowing has been completed in a timely manner, with 90 percent early sowing reported. The province has also recorded a significant increase in the use of certified wheat seed, along with higher uptake of urea fertilizer, largely due to improved availability and comparatively lower prices. These factors are expected to contribute to higher yields and a bumper wheat crop, reflecting the supportive role of the federal ministry in facilitating access to quality seed and fertilizers.

In Sindh, wheat sowing progress was described as satisfactory and has surpassed the assigned sowing targets.
In Balochistan, sowing remains lower due to insufficient rainfall. However, the shortfall is expected to be covered following the anticipated rains.

In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a substantial portion of wheat sowing has been completed, though sowing in snowbound areas is proceeding late. Overall, wheat sowing targets across all provinces are expected to be achieved.

The committee was also briefed on the current wheat stock position. The federal minister assured participants that there is no shortage of wheat in the country and that sufficient stocks are available to meet national requirements for the current food year.

Rana Tanveer Hussain stressed the need for continued coordination between the federal and provincial governments to ensure food security, stabilize markets, and support farmers through timely policy interventions.
