A contempt of court petition has been filed in the Lahore High Court against Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and Provincial Information Minister Azma Bukhari over their public statements regarding court orders related to the Punjab Property Ownership Act.
The petition was filed by citizen Munir Ahmed through Advocate Azhar Siddiq. The petitioner argued that the critical remarks made by the two leaders about a judicial order fall within the scope of contempt of court and have undermined the credibility of the judiciary.
According to the petition, statements issued after the suspension of the property law damaged the dignity of the court and attempted to portray the judiciary as controversial. The petitioner maintained that describing the Lahore High Court’s order as being in favour of land mafia amounted to a serious and unfounded allegation.
The petition further stated that giving a political colour to a judicial decision is unlawful and that such remarks by senior public office holders could negatively affect the judicial process.
The petitioner requested the court to issue show-cause notices to Maryam Nawaz and Azma Bukhari and initiate contempt of court proceedings against them.
