Veteran Bollywood actress and politician Jaya Bachchan has described the concept of marriage as an outdated tradition, suggesting her granddaughter Navya Naveli Nanda focus on enjoying life rather than rushing into wedlock.
In an interview with Indian media, the 77-year-old actress, wife of superstar Amitabh Bachchan, said she believes today’s youth are wiser and more capable of managing their lives independently. “I want Navya not to marry,” she remarked, emphasizing that modern children have the ability to excel without conforming to traditional expectations.
When asked whether Navya should consider leaving her career after marriage, Jaya Bachchan responded, “Marriage is an old-fashioned notion. Today’s children can surpass anyone in their chosen paths without needing to compromise.” She reflected on her own 50-year marriage, calling it a “double-edged sword,” noting, “If you take the sweets of marriage, you will face challenges; if you don’t, you may regret it too.”
The comments have sparked discussion on generational perspectives regarding marriage, career, and personal freedom in modern India.
