Punjab govt orders color-coded bins for waste segregation

2 min read

The Punjab government has issued directives for the use of color-coded waste bins across markets, shopping malls, commercial centers, government offices, and educational institutions, aiming to modernize garbage collection similar to practices in developed countries.

The order follows last year’s approval of the “Smart Waste Management Process,” initially implemented in public and private educational institutions across the province. Authorities said violations of the new system will be addressed by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) under applicable laws.

Under the system, yellow bins will collect paper, packaging, and other recyclable materials, while green bins are designated for bottles, glass fragments, and laboratory waste. Grey bins will hold organic waste such as fruit peels, leftover food, leaves, and spoiled vegetables. Red bins are reserved for metal and iron waste, and orange bins will be used for plastic waste, which can later be recycled.

Officials said the initiative aims to reduce overall waste, promote environmentally friendly habits, and ensure proper disposal and recycling of materials. Citizens can also contact the Punjab Management Helpline (1139) for educational institutions to arrange waste collection.

The Local Government and Community Development Department will support the implementation, while the EPA will monitor compliance and ensure the system is enforced across the province.
