The strategy of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) to withdraw from key assembly committees is beginning to affect public interest, with the Public Accounts Committee-I (PAC-I) in the Punjab Assembly unable to hold meetings for several months.
Assembly sources said PAC-I sessions were stalled following the disqualification of former opposition leader Ahmed Khan Bhucher. The prolonged delay in appointing a new opposition leader has further complicated the situation.
After his appointment, new opposition leader Moeen Riaz Qureshi resigned from the PAC-I chairmanship without convening a single meeting. His resignation is currently awaiting approval from Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmed Khan.
Sources added that the speaker has allowed time for the opposition to consider the resignations, but the party has yet to communicate a final decision. This political maneuvering has directly impacted public accountability, which has been on hold for months.
Historically, the PAC-I chairmanship has been held by the opposition, but the current political stalemate has severely hindered parliamentary oversight and financial transparency in Punjab.
