A group of senior lawyers and retired judges has written to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, urging him to convene a full court meeting in response to the 27th Constitutional Amendment.
The letter, signed by prominent legal figures including Justice (R) Musheer Alam, Makhdoom Ali Khan, Munir A. Malik, Abid Zuberi, Justice (R) Nadeem Akhtar, Akram Sheikh, Anwar Mansoor, Ali Ahmad Kurd, Khawaja Ahmed Hussain, and Salahuddin Ahmed, emphasizes the Supreme Court’s right to provide input on the amendment.
In the text of the letter, the signatories describe the current situation as extraordinary, warning that the Supreme Court is facing one of the greatest challenges since its establishment. They assert that no civil or military government in Pakistan’s history has succeeded in subordinating the Supreme Court.
The letter notes that if this amendment represents a first attempt to undermine the judiciary, it is within the Supreme Court’s authority to respond. The legal experts stressed that prompt and decisive action by the judiciary is essential to maintain its independence and uphold the rule of law.
This development adds to ongoing debates surrounding the 27th Amendment, which has drawn attention from legal, political, and civil society circles across Pakistan.
