A speeding car, allegedly driven under the influence, ran over people sleeping on a footpath in Clifton early Monday morning, leaving two men dead and four others critically injured, police said.
According to police officials, the incident took place near the Abdullah Shah Ghazi shrine in Clifton Block 4, within the limits of Boat Basin Police Station. The white Toyota Corolla (registration number BRT-926) lost control, first hitting a motorcyclist before crashing onto the footpath where several people were asleep.
The deceased were identified as Karim and Shabbir Ahmed. The injured were named as Mudassir, Shakeel, Tahir Ali, and Ahed. Police said the driver, Ahed, and his companion were also among the injured.
Boat Basin SHO Rashid Ali told Express News that initial investigation suggests the car was being driven at “extremely high speed” when the driver lost control. He confirmed that Ahed, the driver, was intoxicated at the time of the crash, while the vehicle is registered in the name of Tahir Ali.
Police reached the site soon after the incident, collected evidence and launched an investigation. Both the car and the motorcycle were badly damaged in the crash. Authorities are also attempting to trace the motorcyclist, whose condition and whereabouts remain unknown after the incident.
Police have taken the injured driver into custody as part of the investigation and are gathering further details related to the incident.
