Shahbaz Shafiq orders removal of PM immunity clause from 27th Constitutional Amendment

2 min read

Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif has directed that the clause granting immunity to the Prime Minister be removed from the draft of the 27th Constitutional Amendment.

In a statement posted on social media platform X, Shahbaz Sharif said he was informed upon returning from Azerbaijan that some party senators had attempted to include a clause in the Senate version of the amendment providing immunity to the Prime Minister.

He clarified that the clause was not part of the cabinet-approved draft and that he had instructed its removal from the amendment.

Shahbaz Sharif emphasized that the elected Prime Minister is accountable under the law and to the people, reiterating the government’s commitment to transparency and rule of law.

The 27th Constitutional Amendment draft, presented in the Senate the previous day, included a request for lifetime immunity for the President of Pakistan. Following reports about the inclusion of the Prime Minister alongside the President in Article 248, this decision by Shahbaz Sharif ensures the Prime Minister remains answerable to legal and parliamentary oversight.
