Pakistani cinema mourns the 45th death anniversary of renowned actor Darpan, whose career spanned nearly three decades and 67 films. Celebrated for his striking looks, tall frame, and expressive performances, Darpan earned widespread acclaim and multiple accolades, including the prestigious Nigar Award.
Born Syed Ishrat Abbas in 1928 in Uttar Pradesh, India, Darpan began his cinematic journey with the film Amanat, directed by Haider Shah, released on December 21, 1950. He later appeared in the Punjabi film Billo before moving briefly to Mumbai in search of broader opportunities. He returned to Lahore to continue his career under the screen name Darpan with the film Baap Ka Gunah. His breakthrough came with the 1959 film Saathi, which became a major hit.
Over his prolific career, Darpan worked in 57 Urdu, 8 Punjabi, and 2 Pashto films, including notable titles such as Raat Ke Rahi, Saheli, Insaan Badalta Hai, Dulhan, Baji, Ek Tera Sahara, Shikwa, Anchal, Naila, and Payal Ki Jhankar. His performances in Saathi and Saheli earned him Nigar Awards for Best Actor.
In addition to acting, Darpan also ventured into film production, with credits including Balm, Gulfam, Tanga Wala, Inspector, and Ek Musafir Ek Haseena. He was married to the celebrated actress Neer Sultana, with their union regarded as one of the most successful marriages in the Pakistani film industry.
Darpan passed away on November 8, 1980, in Lahore and is buried in Muslim Town Graveyard. His legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and cinema enthusiasts.
