Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi on Thursday inaugurated the “Safe and Smart Railway Station” project at the Rawalpindi Railway Station, marking a major step towards modernising Pakistan Railways’ passenger facilities and security infrastructure.

As part of the initiative, a state-of-the-art Safe & Smart Station System has been installed with the support of F-Blow WoW, featuring 143 high-tech surveillance cameras to ensure round-the-clock monitoring of the station, surrounding areas, and the reservation office. Rawalpindi has become the first railway station in the country to be equipped with this advanced system.

The minister also inaugurated the newly built CIP Lounge and waiting area. The new setup aims to enhance passenger comfort and operational efficiency, including real-time monitoring of staff performance.

Work is under way to establish modern CIP lounges at major railway stations across the country, providing a calm, premium environment for travellers. These lounges will offer tea and refreshments, while separate waiting areas are being set up for women and families. Major stations will also be equipped with free Wi-Fi and ATM facilities.

Pakistan Railways is simultaneously carrying out an overhaul of passenger coaches. Three rakes of railcars operating between Lahore and Rawalpindi have already been replaced with refurbished models, while a fourth will be upgraded on November 15. Complimentary snacks have also been introduced on railcar services to improve the travel experience.

“Providing maximum convenience to passengers remains our top priority,” Minister Abbasi said.

He further noted that Faisalabad Railway Station’s upgradation was completed earlier this week, while the inauguration of the revamped Karachi Cantt Station is scheduled soon. Karachi’s upgraded facilities will reportedly be more advanced than those recently introduced in Lahore, featuring upgraded lounges and waiting areas.

Pakistan Railways also announced that, in collaboration with RDMC, an 884-kilometre Rohri–Nokundi track will be upgraded, including the laying of 400 kilometres of new track. The project is being executed under the special directives and vision of the Prime Minister.

Officials said the new and upgraded railway network will bring transformative improvements for both passengers and freight operations, reflecting Pakistan Railways’ ongoing shift towards a modern, safe, and passenger-friendly system.
