Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding press freedom and ensuring a safe working environment for journalists, as the world marks the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists.

In a message issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, he said the day serves as a reminder that a free, informed, and responsible media is essential for any democratic society. He stated that journalists play a vital role in ensuring public access to information and upholding truth, and that any acts of violence, intimidation, or retaliatory crimes against them are, in fact, an attack on freedom of expression.

The prime minister paid tribute to journalists who have faced hardship in pursuit of truth, and expressed solidarity with the families of media workers who lost their lives while performing their professional duties.

He said the government is determined to take measures that ensure effective investigation, justice, and legal action against perpetrators of crimes targeting journalists.

The prime minister also called on the international community, media organisations, and civil society to support efforts aimed at protecting journalists and promoting freedom of expression, stating that a free press is essential for a strong, transparent, and democratic Pakistan.
