Punjab plans to bring 19 new sectors under tax net to boost revenue

The Punjab government is considering adding 19 new sectors to the provincial tax net as part of its plan to increase revenue generation, while also approving the recruitment of 130 enforcement officers in the Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA).

The decision came during a special meeting on revenue collection, chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif in Lahore on Sunday. The meeting reviewed various proposals to expand the province’s tax base and strengthen institutional mechanisms for efficient collection.

According to a briefing by PRA Director General Muazzam Ali Supra, a special enforcement unit will be established within the authority to improve monitoring and compliance. The new unit will include fiscal experts, tax consultants, legal specialists, and data analysts.

The PRA has also introduced a new “Taxpayer Facilitation App” aimed at simplifying the process for taxpayers and promoting transparency.

Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz approved the hiring of 130 enforcement officers to enhance field operations and ensure better enforcement of tax laws. She also set a deadline of October 30 for extending the PRA’s operational coverage to 30 districts across Punjab.

To ensure coordination at the local level, additional revenue-related responsibilities will be assigned to Additional Deputy Commissioners (General) in each district.

During the meeting, the Chief Minister emphasized that honest taxpayers should not be harassed, directing officials to expand the tax network through new sectors rather than imposing undue pressure on compliant citizens.

She added that the provincial government’s priority is to broaden the tax base fairly and transparently, ensuring that public trust in the system is maintained while revenue targets are achieved.
