Punjab cabinet approves ban on TLP after violent protests

2 min read

The Punjab Cabinet has approved a ban on the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP) following violent protests in the province, Information Minister Azma Bokhari announced during a press conference in Lahore.

Bokhari said the provincial government has sent a formal summary to the federal government recommending a complete ban on the hardline religious group under anti-extremism laws.

She noted that while the world has praised Pakistan’s role in promoting peace over the Gaza ceasefire issue, the TLP called for protests even after a peace agreement in Gaza was reached. “During the so-called protests, public and private property was damaged and police vehicles were set on fire,” she said, adding that “those who resort to violence cannot be well-wishers of the country or its people.”

The minister stressed that the state cannot tolerate violent demonstrations under the guise of religious or political expression. “Burning police vehicles doesn’t solve Gaza’s problems,” Bokhari remarked.

She thanked traders, transporters, and the public for rejecting the TLP’s strike call, saying it reflected citizens’ commitment to peace and order.

The minister confirmed that all TLP assets would be seized once the federal government approves the ban, in line with Pakistan’s national security regulations.

The Punjab government’s move follows days of unrest linked to TLP supporters, prompting the provincial authorities to act against what they termed “extremist and anti-state activities.”
