A pilot project for Pakistan’s new digital system to report births and deaths has been launched in more than 50 hospitals and health centers across the country. The initiative is part of the National Biometric and Registration Policy Framework approved by the Prime Minister earlier this year.
According to the Interior Ministry, NADRA has introduced this modern system in leading hospitals including Islamabad’s PIMS, CDA Hospital, FG Hospital, Lahore’s Lady Aitchison Hospital, as well as several facilities in Quetta, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Sindh.
Under the new mechanism, hospitals and health centers will send birth and death notifications directly to NADRA. The system will then alert parents or legal heirs via mobile app and SMS to complete the registration process with their local union council.
The automated system has already received more than 4,000 birth and 407 death notifications nationwide. Citizens can now register these events either through NADRA’s mobile app or by visiting their nearest union council.
Initially, the pilot phase has been rolled out in three districts of Punjab, with plans to expand across the province soon. Work is also underway to equip additional government and private hospitals with the new digital infrastructure.
Once the provincial governments finalize preparations, union councils will also offer integrated registration services under the same system, making the process faster, more efficient, and transparent.
