Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has nominated Moeen Riaz Qureshi as the new Leader of the Opposition in the Punjab Assembly, filling a key position left vacant after the disqualification of Malik Ahmed Khan Bachhar.
Bachhar, the former opposition leader, lost his seat following conviction and sentencing in the May 9 riots case. Since then, the Punjab Assembly had been without an opposition leader, a gap that limited structured political debate in the house.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said that while Bachhar continues his legal fight, he still enjoys the party’s full support. He added that Qureshi’s nomination is an important step to restore effective representation of the opposition in the provincial legislature.
Moeen Riaz Qureshi, a sitting MPA, has been active in Punjab’s political landscape and is expected to play a central role in leading the opposition benches. The official notification of his appointment is expected to be issued soon.
The move marks a significant development in Punjab’s politics, providing the opposition with renewed leadership and setting the stage for more organized participation in assembly proceedings.
