“Strong Earthquake Jolts Russia’s Kamchatka, No Tsunami Threat”

2 min read

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early Saturday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).

The quake, which hit around 111 km east of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky at a depth of 39 km, has been identified as the strongest aftershock yet of the devastating 8.8-magnitude earthquake that shook the region on July 29.

No tsunami warning issued

Authorities confirmed that no tsunami warning is currently in effect. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center initially flagged a potential risk but later withdrew the alert.

Japan’s Meteorological Agency also confirmed that no tsunami advisory had been issued for the Japanese coast.

Aftermath of July’s deadly quake

The July 29 earthquake, one of the most powerful in modern history, triggered tsunami waves that struck Russia’s Rybachiy naval base — home to the Pacific Fleet’s nuclear submarines. Satellite images later suggested damage at the site.

That quake generated waves up to four meters high, injured several people, and forced evacuations along Japan’s east coast, which remains scarred by the 2011 disaster.

Kamchatka has faced a series of powerful tremors this summer, with at least five major quakes recorded in July alone. Saturday’s 7.4-magnitude aftershock underscores the region’s ongoing seismic volatility.

For now, no casualties or structural damages have been reported from the latest quake, but officials are continuing to monitor the situation closely.
