LAHORE: It has been 23 years since Ahmad Rahi, the celebrated poet, lyricist, and film writer who gave Pakistani cinema hundreds of timeless songs, bid farewell to his fans.

Born as Ghulam Ahmad in Amritsar on November 13, 1923, Rahi moved to Lahore in 1940. He began his film career with the Punjabi movie Baeli, but it was the songs of Chho Manter that first brought him immense popularity.

Rahi is best remembered for penning unforgettable songs for the iconic Punjabi classic Heer Ranjha, many of which remain popular to this day. His work also graced notable films such as Yake Wali, Mirza Jatt, Chho Manter, Mehndi Walay Hath, and Nikki Jai Haan.

In recognition of his outstanding contribution to cinema, Ahmad Rahi was honored with the Pride of Performance, Nigar Awards, and Bolan Awards. Beyond films, he also wrote numerous folk songs and ghazals, including the evergreen piece “Dil Ke Afsanay” from the film Baji.

Ahmad Rahi passed away on September 2, 2002, in Lahore after a brief illness, but his words and melodies continue to live on in the hearts of music lovers.
