ISLAMABAD: The United Nations (UN) has allocated 600,000 U.S. dollars to support Pakistan’s response to the devastating 2025 monsoon season, according to a UN spokesperson.
Speaking at a press briefing in New York, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that according to local authorities, heavy rains and flash floods over the past 10 days have killed at least 400 people and left more than 190 injured across Pakistan. More than 20,000 people remain displaced.
Dujarric added that Pakistan’s meteorological department has warned of a new monsoon system in the forecast, with heavy rainfall expected to continue in the coming days.
According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), flood-affected communities urgently need shelter, medical assistance, cash-for-work support, hygiene kits, clean drinking water, education, and protection services, particularly for women and girls.
“The authorities are leading the response with the support of the United Nations and local partners,” the spokesperson noted.
Since the start of the monsoon season on June 26, Pakistan has reported 802 fatalities and over 1,000 injuries linked to torrential rains and flooding, according to local authorities.
