ISLAMABAD: Over 20 people were killed and six others injured Monday after a cloudburst struck a village in Swabi district of northwest Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a local official told Xinhua.

Deputy Commissioner of Swabi Nasrullah Khan said that the cloudburst hit Glori village, destroying at least 15 houses.

“A number of people were buried under the debris or swept away by the torrent. So far, over 20 bodies have been recovered,” the official said.

Although the rain has stopped, rescue operations were facing difficulties due to damaged roads leading to the village, said the official, adding that additional rescue teams have been summoned from neighboring districts to assist in the operations.

A rescue worker from Alkhidmat Foundation told Xinhua that some other villages were also affected by flash floods on Monday, and the lack of communication facilities has made it difficult to assess the situation, and rescue workers were reaching certain areas on foot, causing delays in relief efforts.

Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority said on Monday that at least 660 people have died and 935 others have been injured in rain-related accidents since June 26.
