A 48-year-old woman from Karachi’s East district has become the first confirmed fatality from dengue fever in Sindh this year, health officials said on Saturday.
According to the Sindh Health Department, the woman was admitted to the Aga Khan University Hospital on July 23 after exhibiting symptoms of the mosquito-borne viral disease. Her diagnostic tests later confirmed a positive dengue infection.
Officials said the patient was also suffering from underlying health conditions, including diabetes and a urinary tract infection (UTI), which may have exacerbated the illness. She succumbed to complications related to the disease on Thursday.
This marks the first dengue-related death in Sindh in 2025. So far, a total of 345 cases have been reported across the province, with the majority emerging from Karachi.
The health department has urged citizens to take preventive measures, including avoiding stagnant water, using mosquito repellents, and ensuring regular fumigation in homes and public areas.
Dengue, a viral infection transmitted through the Aedes aegypti mosquito, typically surges during the monsoon season in Pakistan, putting increased pressure on the already strained public health infrastructure.
