Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has taken strict notice of the National Tariff Commission’s (NTC) poor performance and has ordered immediate structural reforms.
According to details surfaced on Thursday, during a high-level meeting chaired by the premier, it was decided that the NTC would undergo a complete legal and administrative restructuring. He directed that the commission be made more effective on an urgent basis. The restructuring will also include the redefinition of legal, administrative, and institutional powers and responsibilities.
The prime minister has issued directives to align the commission with modern requirements.
PM Shehbaz also ordered a third-party audit of the commission’s recent performance. He emphasised the need to reform the commission along modern lines to support a new tariff regime.
He was of the view that the capacity to gather accurate data on imports, exports and real market conditions is essential. Shehbaz Sharif stressed the importance of strengthening the commission’s research capabilities and adopting an automated system to resolve business-related issues.
He added that the government is fully committed to addressing the gaps in training and resources. The prime minister also instructed the immediate activation of the NTC’s appellate tribunal and demanded a progress report on the implementation of these directives by next month.
