President Asif Ali Zardari on Saturday credited the Pakistani armed forces for securing what he termed as a “historic victory” against India, asserting that their bravery had dealt a severe blow to the so-called military might of the neighbouring country.

In a statement issued by the Presidency, Mr Zardari congratulated both the nation and the armed forces, calling the development “the worst defeat for the eternal enemy.” He reiterated Pakistan’s firm stance on not compromising its sovereignty under any circumstances.

“The courage and determination shown by our armed forces have once again proven that the spirit of Pakistan is stronger than any threat posed by an adversary five times our size,” said the President.

Mr Zardari also expressed gratitude to Pakistan’s international partners for their diplomatic and moral support during what he described as “trying times.” He specifically mentioned China, the United States, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Iran for standing by Pakistan.

He said the resilience demonstrated by the nation in the face of adversity reinforces the ideology behind the two-nation theory, adding, “This resolve is unparalleled and a source of pride for every Pakistani.”

While lauding the collective strength and faith of the nation, the President underscored Pakistan’s desire for peace. “Pakistan does not seek provocation. We want peace, but peace with dignity and mutual respect,” he said.

He called upon the nation to celebrate this moment but also to offer prayers for those who were martyred in defence of the homeland.

President Zardari further reiterated Pakistan’s long-standing position on the Kashmir issue, stating that sustainable peace in South Asia was not possible without a just and final settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with United Nations Security Council resolutions.

He also emphasised the importance of resolving other critical issues in the region, particularly the Indus Waters Treaty, which has long been a point of contention between Islamabad and New Delhi.
