Consumers may get 50 paisa per unit relief: NEPRA

1 min read

NEPRA has completed the hearing on tariff revision requests from seven Independent Power Producers (IPPs). If approved, consumers could receive a relief of 50 paisa per unit, leading to an estimated overall saving of Rs920 billion.

The hearing was held on the requests submitted by seven IPPs under the 2002 power policy, including Nishat Chunian Power, Nishat Power, Narowal Energy Limited, Liberty Power Tech Limited, Engro Powergen Qadirpur Limited, Sapphire Electric Power Limited, and Saif Power Limited. The requests aimed at reducing power generation costs.

Key issues discussed included the exchange rate adjustment mechanism, payment system under the “Take or Pay” model, and insurance cap regulations. The Central Power Purchasing Agency (CPPA) informed NEPRA that agreements with these IPPs had been finalized, and the IPPs had waived over Rs. 11 billion in late payment surcharges.

As a result of these negotiations, electricity tariffs could be reduced by 50 paisa per unit. NEPRA has completed the hearing and will announce its decision later.
