SC for obtaining fresh affidavits from agency heads on no meddling in politics

2 min read

A constitutional bench of the Supreme Court on Wednesday conducted a hearing on the implementation of the landmark Asghar Khan case decision.

During the proceedings, Additional Attorney General informed the court that the FIA had closed its inquiry into the case, stating that no evidence of money distribution among politicians had been found. Responding to this, Justice Hassan Azhar Rizvi asked whether the distributed amounts were recovered and noted that the allegations involve prominent political figures.

Justice Jamal Mandokhail questioned whether the heads of intelligence agencies had submitted affidavits confirming the dismantling of political cells, as required by the court’s earlier decision.

The Additional Attorney General assured the court that intelligence agencies have no role in politics under the Constitution and the law. Justice Mandokhail suggested obtaining fresh affidavits from the current agency heads if none had been submitted earlier.

The Additional Attorney General maintained that the directives in the Asghar Khan case judgment had been implemented, including the disbanding of political cells within intelligence agencies. However, the court directed the FIA to provide satisfactory evidence of compliance with the ruling.

The bench also sought a detailed report from the Ministry of Defence regarding the implementation of the judgment. The hearing was adjourned for further proceedings.
