The Punjab Environment Department has declared a ‘red alert’ for Lahore due to a significant increase in smog expected over the next few days.
The Met Office has forecast a noticeable rise in smog levels from November 6 to 8, prompting urgent health warnings for residents.
Lahore’s air quality index (AQI) stood at an alarming 293 around 1pm, with pollutant levels exceeding World Health Organization guidelines by 42.8 times and making the city the world’s most polluted.
Specific areas are experiencing even more severe conditions, with Gulberg recording an AQI of 515, Defence Phase 8 at 424, and DHA Phase 5 at 416.
As wind patterns shift from east to west at a speed of 4km per hour, experts are warning that the situation could deteriorate further. Medical professionals have advised citizens to minimize outdoor activities and wear masks when necessary.
In response to the increasing air pollution, the Environment Department has established a Smog War Room, which is tasked with tackling various aspects of air quality management.
Notified by Environment DG Imran Hamid Sheikh, the Smog War Room consists of 18 members, while officers from eight departments have been ordered to report to it. Focal persons have been appointed for air quality monitoring, smog forecasting, and oversight of industries and traffic, along with representatives from the health department, Safe City, meteorology, and SUPARCO.
