Mahira Khan one of Pakistan’s leading actresses has ignited a fresh debate after sharing her views on traditional customs regarding clothing.
During an in-depth conversation with renowned poet Anwar Maqsood at the Arts Council Karachi, the superstar reflected on her career, the importance of cultural values, and her family’s influence on her upbringing.
In the discussion, Mahira spoke fondly of her late grandmother, mentioning how she disapproved of sleeveless clothing. “I was always cautious around my grandmother and avoided wearing sleeveless clothes out of respect for her,” Mahira revealed.
The actress emphasised that while younger generations are intelligent and aware, cultural values and the practice of wearing modest clothing should not be abandoned.
“This tarbiyat (upbringing) is essential and should remain intact,” she added.
However, her statement has sparked criticism online, with several social media users pointing out Mahira’s own preference for sleeveless outfits on various public occasions. Some critics labelled her remarks as contradictory, stating that her lifestyle choices do not align with the values she advocates.
Despite the backlash, Mahira Khan continues to enjoy widespread admiration, with fans appreciating her honesty and reflective views on cultural preservation.
The actress, who began her career as a VJ before transitioning to films and television dramas, remains a celebrated figure both in Pakistan and internationally, including her brief stint in Bollywood.
