Can’t carry her own children due to medical complications: Selena Gomez

3 min read

Singer and actor Selena Gomez revealed that she is unable to carry her own children due to medical issues while opening up about her journey of coming to terms with this reality, stating it was something she had to “grieve.”

She broke the news in a heartfelt and candid interview with Vanity Fair.

“I haven’t ever said this, but I unfortunately can’t carry my own children,” Gomez shared. “I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s in jeopardy. That was something I had to grieve for a while.”

Gomez, who has been open about her battle with lupus, an incurable autoimmune disease, underwent a kidney transplant in 2017 as a result of the condition. Additionally, she has spoken publicly about living with bipolar disorder, for which the medication she takes could further complicate a safe pregnancy.

Despite this, Gomez expressed her desire to become a mother and is exploring the possibilities of surrogacy or adoption. “It’s not necessarily the way I envisioned it. I thought it would happen the way it happens for everyone. I’m in a much better place with that,” she said. Gomez added that she is thankful for the alternative paths available for those wanting to start families, and she remains optimistic about her future journey to motherhood.

“I’m excited for what that journey will look like, but it’ll look a little different. At the end of the day, I don’t care. It’ll be mine. It’ll be my baby,” she said.

Gomez is currently in a relationship with music producer Benny Blanco, though she did not discuss any immediate plans regarding starting a family.
