Millions in foreign aid misused in Afghanistan under Taliban rule

2 min read

Foreign aid to Afghanistan is being misused under Taliban rule, according to recent reports. The American magazine Foreign Policy states that the Taliban government is misusing millions of dollars in aid, with a significant portion disappearing due to corruption before reaching those in need.

Despite being a major recipient of global aid, Afghanistan remains at the forefront of terrorism. The Taliban are reportedly using the aid money for their own political agendas rather than controlling terrorism. Afghan media sources suggest that a large portion of foreign aid falls victim to corruption.

According to Foreign Policy, most of the foreign funding is spent on high-ranking officials’ personal agendas. The Taliban are not accountable to anyone regarding the distribution of aid. They continue to request financial assistance from foreign governments, citing economic hardship, hunger, and poverty.

The magazine reports that the Taliban government uses economic distress to solicit aid from foreign governments but fails to properly manage or distribute it. Sources indicate that aid often disappears before reaching the intended beneficiaries.

There are calls for the international community to establish a monitoring team to oversee the management and systematic distribution of foreign aid to Afghanistan.
