Pakistan celebrates 5-year anniversary of historic air defense

2 min read

On February 27, 2019, the Pakistan Air Force made history by successfully defending against Indian aggression, marking it as a momentous day in Pakistan’s military history.

During a brief aerial engagement, Pakistani jets retaliated fiercely, downing an Indian aircraft and capturing Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman, the pilot of the downed plane.

This operation, dubbed “Operation Swift Retort,” showcased Pakistan’s resolve and capability in safeguarding its sovereignty.

Under Pakistani custody, Wing Commander Abhinandan acknowledged the professionalism and hospitality of the Pakistani military and expressed appreciation for Pakistani tea in a viral video that circulated on social media.

The hashtag #TeaIsFantastic trended for 36 hours on various social media platforms, reflecting the public’s enthusiasm and support for Pakistan’s response.

Even five years later, discussions about Wing Commander Abhinandan’s encounter over tea remain prevalent in Pakistan.

As a gesture of goodwill and in adherence to international norms, Pakistan released Wing Commander Abhinandan approximately 60 hours after his capture.

It’s noteworthy that India had to pay a hefty price, equivalent to the cost of its aircraft, for a cup of tea.

The lesson of Pakistani tea and hospitality is one that India will not forget for centuries to come.
