In Kashmir, Dr. Farooq Ashai, was martyred exactly 31 years ago. On February 18, 1993, Dr. Farooq Ashai fell victim to the bullets fired by Indian forces, marking a tragic end to his valiant life.

His martyrdom day was commemorated with solemnity, attended by his wife, Dr. Fareeda, and their daughter, alongside countless admirers.

Dr. Ashai was targeted just 100 meters away from the hospital where he was being treated, a testament to the brutality of the situation.

The ambulance carrying Dr. Ashai’s medical team, including surgeons Dr. Manzoor and Dr. Sethi, was deliberately halted by the Central Reserve Police Force for several hours, further complicating his critical condition due to delayed medical attention.

Despite his father being a renowned orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Farooq Ashai carved his own legacy in the field of orthopedics, especially as the founder of the Bone and Joint Hospital in Srinagar.

During his lifetime, Dr. Ashai was a proficient orthopedic surgeon and earned the title of the spokesman for the wounded civilians in Kashmir, tirelessly advocating for their rights.

Dr. Farooq Ashai’s contributions were not confined to the operating theater; he also played a pivotal role as a mediator between international journalists and human rights advocates, shedding light on the plight of Kashmiris.

His memory lives on through his selfless service and unwavering commitment to justice, inspiring generations to come.
