Obstacle in Zaka Ashraf’s way before PCB chairman election

3 min read

The election of the PCB chairman will be held on Tuesday, June 27, at the PCB headquarters in Lahore. Najam Shetty recently announced that he has withdrawn from the PCB chairman race. After his withdrawal, former PCB chairman, Zaka Ashraf is favorite to take over again, but he is likely to face several hurdles.

Najam Shetty also visited the National Cricket Academy, where most of the directors, department heads and senior members were present in the boardroom for his farewell ceremony.

According to sources, Shetty stressed the importance of keeping all projects on track, as things could change at any time. In this meeting, some officials also proposed the idea of postponing the election.

Addressing colleagues, an official revealed, “Prepare yourself for extended office hours,” referring to Zaka Ashraf’s tendency to work late into the night after arriving in the afternoon. However, earlier on Wednesday afternoon, a senior member of the board called a meeting of the senior officials, at which time it was mentioned that it was not certain whether the election would be held immediately.

Moreover, the possibility of further legal battles is not out of the question.

Sources said some PCB officials were playing a “double game”. These officials are said to have assured Sethi of their loyalty, Zaka has also maintained contact with Ashraf. Their purported objective is to protect their positions regardless of who takes over the role of chairman.

Additionally, secret efforts are reportedly underway to stage a surprise during the elections. Prime Minister and PML-N patron Shehbaz Sharif nominated Mustafa Ramdeh alongside Zaka Ashraf as possible candidates for the post of PCB chairman. Some officials want Ramdeo to be elected as chairman.

There are also accusations of strategically placing “own people” within the BOG (Board of Governors), as it would be easier to change the leadership through a no-confidence motion after the general election.
