BEIJING: China’s meteorological authorities on Saturday renewed a blue alert for rainstorms in southern parts of the country.

From 8 p.m. Saturday to 8 p.m. Sunday, heavy rains or rainstorms are forecast to lash parts of Guangxi, Guangdong, Hainan, Fujian, Taiwan, Yunnan and Tibet, with up to 180 millimeters of rain expected in southwestern Guangdong and northern Hainan, according to the National Meteorological Center.

Some areas of these regions will also experience heavy rainfall marked by 20 to over 80 millimeters of hourly precipitation, as well as severe convective weather such as thunderstorms and gales, the meteorological center said.

It has advised local governments and residents to take precautions accordingly. Schools and kindergartens should work to ensure the safety of children, and drivers should remain alert to road waterlogging and traffic jams.

China has a four-tier, color-coded weather warning system, with red representing the most severe warning, followed by orange, yellow and blue.
