STEMI occurs when a coronary artery is completely blocked and the heart muscle dies. Other heart attacks involve partial blockage of arteries.

Tobacco use, smoking, diabetes, cholesterol, alcohol, drugs such as amphetamines, cocaine, and lack of physical activity are thought to be lifestyle habits that trigger STEMI.

Having a family history of heart disease can also increase your risk of developing a STEMI.
