With less than four months remaining before the start of the FIFA World Cup, serious security concerns in co-host nation Mexico have drawn international attention.
According to international media reports, despite ongoing violent activities linked to criminal cartels, FIFA has refused to relocate World Cup matches from Mexico. The decision comes amid heightened tensions following recent developments in the country’s security landscape.
Reports said that military forces recently killed Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, widely known by the alias “El Mencho,” a notorious drug cartel leader. His death reportedly triggered retaliatory attacks by cartel groups, leading to the postponement of several football matches in affected areas.
However, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reiterated his full confidence in Mexico’s ability to host World Cup matches, insisting that fixtures will not be moved and that preparations will continue as planned.
