Pakistan’s first gender-sorted semen lab set up in Okara

The Green Corporate Livestock Initiative (GCLI) has established the country’s first gender-sorted semen laboratory in Okara, marking a significant milestone in the modernisation of Pakistan’s livestock sector.

The development is being described as a breakthrough that opens new avenues for scientific advancement in livestock breeding and productivity enhancement.

According to GCLI, the initiative forms part of broader practical measures aimed at aligning the national livestock sector with modern technology. The project seeks to transform livestock into a sustainable and profitable industry through genetic improvement, advanced breeding technologies, corporate farming and value addition.

With the establishment of the laboratory, farmers are now being provided quality gender-sorted semen at reasonable prices. The technology enables selection of the animal’s sex during artificial insemination, allowing producers to achieve production targets more effectively.

Experts say that in dairy farming, where female animals hold greater economic importance, the technology can significantly accelerate milk production. In the beef sector, selection of male animals can enhance both meat yield and quality.

Previously, gender-sorted semen was imported into Pakistan, making it costly and available only on a limited scale. With this local facility, the technology is now accessible to ordinary farmers, reducing costs and increasing productivity.

To ensure high-quality supply, GCLI has imported renowned breeding bulls with superior traits from the United States, Brazil, Australia and other countries. Separate gender-sorted semen of specialised breeds for milk and meat production is being provided to meet the distinct needs of the sector.

Farmers have welcomed the initiative, expressing hope that it will promote genetic improvement, boost output and contribute to greater economic stability in the livestock industry.
