Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairman Tarique Rahman was sworn in as the new prime minister of Bangladesh on Tuesday, with President Mohammed Shahabuddin administering the oath to him and the country’s new cabinet ministers at a ceremony in Dhaka.
A total of 25 ministers and 24 state ministers took the oath following Rahman’s elevation. The BNP parliamentary party had earlier elected Rahman as its leader after securing a decisive victory in the national parliament elections held on February 12.
According to official results released by the Election Commission, the BNP won 209 seats in the 13th national parliament, achieving a clear majority to form the government.
This marks Bangladesh’s first general election since former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned in August 2024 amid nationwide political unrest, ending her long tenure in office.
