Fourteen former international cricket captains have appealed to the Government of Pakistan to provide former Pakistani captain Imran Khan with improved jail facilities and adequate medical care.
According to reports from Australian media, the former players expressed deep concern over Khan’s health at the age of 73, highlighting issues related to his vision and the conditions of prolonged imprisonment.
The letter, drafted by former Australian captain Greg Chappell, was signed by a host of former captains from Australia, England, West Indies, New Zealand, and India, including Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev. It was addressed to Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif.
In their statement, the former cricketers emphasized that cricket teaches fairness, respect, and dignity, and called for Khan to be granted basic human rights and humane treatment.
They urged that he be allowed immediate and continuous medical examinations by doctors of his choice, given access to meet family members, and ensured a transparent legal process.
The statement added that cricket has always served as a bridge between nations, and while competition on the field ends, respect must endure beyond the game.
