Rawalpindi Express questions PCB leadership

3 min read

Former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, popularly known as the Rawalpindi Express, has openly acknowledged Pakistan’s defeat to India and pointed to deep-rooted structural flaws behind the team’s decline.

Speaking during a program on an Indian television channel, Shoaib Akhtar launched sharp criticism at Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, questioning his cricketing credentials. He remarked that appointing individuals without adequate understanding of the game to top administrative positions inevitably leads to poor outcomes.

Akhtar argued that mismanagement and flawed decision-making at the top have damaged the team’s direction. He said elevating players to “superstar” status despite inconsistent performances has further weakened the side, adding that a team cannot progress if key players fail to deliver in crucial matches.

He maintained that handing over major institutions to individuals lacking seriousness or expertise results in decline, and stressed that merit-based appointments are essential for revival.

The former pacer admitted that Indian cricket has moved far ahead while Pakistan has lagged behind, stating that the gap between the two sides is evident on the field. He noted that discussions in studios cannot bridge the competitive difference visible in international contests.

Despite his criticism, Akhtar said he would continue supporting the national team and expressed hope that Pakistan would defeat Namibia to secure qualification for the next stage of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.

Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif, who was also part of the program, endorsed Akhtar’s remarks, saying the situation of Pakistan cricket required no further elaboration.
India defeated Pakistan by 61 runs in their group-stage clash of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, intensifying debate over the management and performance of the national side.
